Kobe Bryant knew there were going to be games like this. No longer surrounded by fellow future Hall of Famers Shaquille O'Neal, Karl Malone and Gary Payton, Bryant and the rest of the Los Angeles Lakers couldn't rally. Tim Duncan had a double-double, and San Antonio won 105-96 Friday night in the teams' first meeting since the Lakers eliminated the Spurs from the Western Conference semifinals last season.

For months, the Charlotte Bobcats (news) were nothing more than a concept with a bright orange logo. They became a reality Thursday night in their NBA debut, hanging tough in a 103-96 loss to Washington that impressed Wizards star Antawn Jamison.

For one game, the Los Angeles Lakers didn't miss Shaquille O'Neal one bit. Chris Mihm put up close to Shaq-like numbers Tuesday night, getting a career-high 23 points, 12 rebounds and two blocked shots in the Lakers' season-opening 89-78 victory over the Denver Nuggets.
