If there is a guardian angel for Boston Red Sox fans (and there's some debate about that), the work load is drastically lighter today. The Red Sox, New England's beloved baseball heartbreakers, have won their first World Series title since 1918, and it's understandable if their stunned followers, accustomed to failure and despair, aren't sure what to do next.

Manny Ramirez drove in two runs, including a solo homer, and Pedro Martinez set down 14 straight batters as the Boston Red Sox defeated the St. Louis Cardinals 4-1 Tuesday to move within a victory of their first World Series title since 1918.

Bellhorn's Homer Gives Game 1 to Red Sox |

Mark Bellhorn created his own October memory by recalling a Fenway Park moment frozen in time: Carlton Fisk's home run in Game 6 back in 1975. Bellhorn hit a drive off the screen attached to Pesky's Pole in right field in the eighth inning, and the Boston Red Sox held on to take the highest-scoring opener in World Series history, beating the St. Louis Cardinals 11-9 on Saturday night.

Albert Pujols delighted in denting the Green Monster, and Keith Foulke kidded about the wall messing with his mind. For a day at least, the St. Louis Cardinals and Boston Red Sox were just happy to be at Fenway Park. Roger Clemens, the New York Yankees and the other obstacles were out of the way — up next, the 100th World Series. They'll turn serious starting Saturday night in Game 1, with Boston knuckleballer Tim Wakefield facing Woody Williams.

Pitching on a dislocated ankle tendon that forced him out of the opener, Curt Schilling smothered the New York Yankees by allowing one run over seven innings to lead the Red Sox to a 4-2 victory Tuesday night and pull Boston into a 3-3 tie in an AL championship series that was three outs from a sweep just two days earlier.
