MOST MEN'S college soccer players spend time during the summer working on their game, attending summer school or just relaxing. But this past summer, Cal State Hayward players had an adventure that few could match.
Hayward, with eight players whose hometowns are outside the United States, played in the Carlos Quintanilla Schmidt University Friendship Cup tournament in El Salvador.
The tournament is named after the country's vice president, Quintanilla Schmidt. The invitation to play came from the Salvadorian Consulate in San Francisco, and the trip was sponsored jointly by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the National Institute of Salvadorian Sports.
