By the time Claudia Aguilar and Odalys Perez realized there was no formal celebration to observe Hispanic Heritage Month, a good part of the month was already over.
"I wasn't thinking of doing anything this year because it was too late," said Perez, head of the Grand Island Multicultural Coalition. "But Claudia wouldn't let me. She said, 'No, we have to do something.'"
That something will take place from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Conestoga Mall in Grand Island, and will miss the formal celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month by one day. The month is recognized from Sept. 15 through Oct. 15, said Aguilar, who works for Hope Harbor in Grand Island.
