More than six years after Hurricane Mitch devastated much of Central America, U.S. immigration officials are allowing nationals from the two most damaged countries to stay in the United States another 18 months.
The extension affects some 82,000 Hondurans and 4,000 Nicaraguans nationwide, including about 20,000 people in the Bay Area.
"Honduras and Nicaragua remain unable, temporarily, to handle adequately the return of its nationals," the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services explained in a press release.
