Bernardo Callejas was 8 years old in 1980 when his family fled Nicaragua as violence rent the Central American nation. After 16 years in Texas and Miami, he returned home, fluently bilingual and well-educated.
"I went back to help rebuild the country," said Callejas, now 32.
That quest brought Callejas and a colleague, Mario Espana, to the Carolinas last month, hunting jobs for their homeland. The pair work for ProNicaragua, an economic-development agency the country's president set up in 2002 to recruit foreign investment. Targeted industries range from electronic assembly to call centers, but textiles and apparel have the greatest job potential and so are the top recruiting priority.
