Residents of El Salvador are worried about delinquency, according to a poll by CID-Gallup published in El Diario de Hoy. 33 per cent of respondents believe crime and safety are the main problems in the country right now.
Antonio Saca of the conservative Nationalist Republican Alliance (ARENA) won last March’s presidential election with 57.73 per cent of the vote. ARENA candidates have won the last four presidential ballots in the Central American country.
Last year, Saca introduced a crackdown on gang activity, which included the deployment of more than 1,000 soldiers to assist police officers in arresting mob leaders. El Salvador’s prison population has doubled to 12,000 inmates over the past five years. Around 40 per cent of all incarcerated persons once belonged to street gangs.
