The Canadian arm of 3M Co. has integrated scanning, fingerprint and face recognition technologies to help the government of Belize issue secure passports that can be verified by machine.
The 3M Identity Document Issuance System cost more than $1 million and is expected to help Belize stop people from securing passports under a variety of identities. It is expected to curb a serious problem for Belize, which has sometimes had more passports issued than it had citizens.
The International Office of Migration and the U.S. State Department worked with Belize to find a solution and provided funding so 3M's technology could be used in the small Central American country.
