Garifuna Soccer in Center Stage at the Asian Champ League

05/13/04
By: Jerry Castro
Baltimore, MD _5/12/2004

Ask Marcello Balboa, the former US soccer player about Garifuna soccer, Saul
Martinez, the darling of the 2001 Gold Cup in Colombia, and he'll point to the world
cup qualifying game Honduras won against the US in Washington DC in the fall of
2001.

It seemed as Saul Martinez, a member of the Judutu Crew that featured talents like
Milton "Tyson" Nunez and David Suazo, had vanished from the soccer scene. But in a
recent report by the Shanghai Star, a Chinese newspaper, places the Garifuna talent
as a talented powerhouse at the AFC championship series in China.

Saul Martinez, who plays for the Shanghai Shenhua, the powerful soccer organization
in China, is scheduled to play against the Chonbuk Motors on May 19 in Bangkok.

Martinez, whose only tournament goal came against Jubilo Iwata, came at the 83rd
minute to break the tie and send the team to the next round.

Saul Martinez began his career at the Van Cortland Park tournament in New York. From
there he had moved to play in the MLS (Miami), the Gold Cup (where he had Andres
Cantor from Telemundo shouting "un saludo a la Ceiba en Hondu") and the world cup
qualifying games for the 2002 World Cup in China / Japan.

Some of the Asian League games are broadcasted through Fox Sports Net, so check your
local listing for game schedules.
