BRONX, NY _7/22/2003

Ramon Martinez is a humble man. He is 61 years of age and an agile man in search of a dream of one day have a medical center in his town of Livingston on the Atlantic coast of Guatemala.

For many years, he had fought in organizing a movement. Today he is making it public in inviting not only Garinagu, but those who believe and care about the health conditions the people from Labuga face without an adequate medical center.

Mr. Martinez has a long history as an activist. He used to take notebooks, pencils and school aids to the school children in Livingston.

"We are only asking people to donate $0.60 cents per household", he says recently in the Bronx. "We really need the help and support of the people in order to provide the assistance of the medical center."

Livingston is located on the western coasts of Guatemala. It is the home of the biggest celebration of the arrival of Garinagu , besides the one in Honduras in April 12.

Mr. Martinez is scheduling a meeting to meet with the Bronx Garifuna community as well as the one accross the city.

"It really doesn't matter where you from", he says still in work uniform on his way to a meeting at Diego's Grocery.

"We are people and we need that health facility in Livingston."

To contact him or to make a donation of $0.60 cents, you can call him at 212-261-2211 and 212-161-2484.
