Things did not go exactly as planned for the defending NFC champs on Monday night. Opening the season in front of a raucous home crowd against the Green Bay Packers, Carolina looked nothing like the team that fell three points short of the organization's first Super Bowl title nearly eight months ago.
And not only did the Panthers lose the game, 24-14, but they lost wide receiver Steve Smith, the club's top playmaker, for an extended period of time with a broken left fibula.
