Robert Corbin is preparing his science class for a grasshopper safari, part of a yearlong project linking the wildlife outside Waddell High to the future of the planet.
Every few sentences, he asks a student to translate for classmates who speak only Spanish.
As the class heads out, nets in hand, Corbin urges four students in the hall to come along.
They're struggling in school. Some are in trouble with the law. Getting them to catch bugs beats letting them loiter.
It's a long way from Myers Park High School, where Corbin taught for 15 years.
There, he says, virtually all his students were middle-class, white and fast-tracking toward success in the International Baccalaureate magnet program.
