Squarefootball, Ireland
Sometime in the next few years, when I’ve made my fortune from writing for http://www.squarefootball.net, it’s my intention to move to Queretaro, a distinctly middle class city in Mexico (there was recently a very positive article in Newsweek, no less), which just happens to be where my wife was born. There are many plus points about the city – cheap property prices, good weather, secure (certainly by Mexican standards) and the local club side, Queretaro “Gallos Blancos” (White Roosters), playing in the Primera Liga…or at least they were.
Last season was Queretaro’s first back in the top-flight after a lengthy absence and they performed well enough to finish in the top half of the table at the end of Clausura 2004. Back in April, I went to a game at La Corregidora, where they drew 4:4 with Monterrey on a record-breaking day when Mexico went goal crazy (50 goals in 10 games). They were certainly a little naïve defensively, but they showed enough spirit for me to think that I could enjoy many visits from the elite of Mexican football in my dotage.
