Honduras is asking universities in Chile and Mexico to urgently lend it equipment to raise a 17th century galleon submerged off its Atlantic coast before the wreck is ransacked by thieves.
Carmen Julia Fajardo of the Honduras Anthropology and History Institute (INAH) said on Tuesday the galleon was located in waters just off the San Fernando Fortress, about 112 miles (180 km) north of the Honduran capital Tegucigalpa and once a first line of defense against British pirates in colonial times.
"The galleon is there, or very close to where the discoveries were made," said Fajardo. "The problem is that we don't have the equipment to extract it and we are worried about it being ransacked, so we are asking for emergency assistance from universities in Mexico and Chile."
