Gordon Burns, of Shotts, North Lanarkshire, said he was lucky to be alive after moving hotels midway into a break in the now devastated Sri Lanka.
He moved from Mirissa on the south-west coast to Galle in the north, a coastal town 70 miles south of Colombo.
After the tsunami hit he said he saw the tide rise and fall by between 30 and 40ft for about three hours.
Latest estimates claim about 68,000 people have died, with some aid agencies suggesting that the death toll is likely to rise above 100,000.
