Long-haul travel is a world unto itself, treating time zones as if they were no more than periodic speed limit signs. Two hours out of a 6:00 p.m. departure from Detroit, we are served dinner. Four hours later, we are served breakfast prior to landing in Frankfurt, where it is 7:00 a.m.

The airport is a seemingly endless labyrinth of hallways lined with two-seater benches that are far too short to stretch out and sleep on, but that doesn't stop people - including us - from trying. Bodies lie curled and twisted, faces covered by hats or handkerchiefs, feet askew.
