Growing up in El Salvador in the 1970s and 1980s, Coreas said, she often saw hovering gunships and militiamen hauling people away.
“From one day to another, you had to walk by dead people in the street,” she said, “or listen to your neighbor crying because their girl or boy had been arrested and you knew the next day he or she would be dead.”
