Ricardo Maduro holds a low level of public backing in Honduras, according to a poll by CID-Gallup. Only 32 per cent of respondents rate the president’s performance as good or very good.
Maduro was elected president in November 2001 as the nominee for the National Party (PN), garnering 52.2 per cent of all cast ballots. In May 2003, Honduras was the first Central American country to commit troops to the United States-led coalition effort in Iraq. The deployment ended in May 2004.
