In the 1980s, the U.S. financially backed the Contra army to oppose the ruling Sandinista Nicaraguan government. Thousands of Nicaraguans died during the civil war that ensued. During that decade, Paul Dix, a professional photographer, and Pam Fitzpatrick, the director of the north Pacific office of the organization Witness for Peace, documented the human rights abuses surrounding the U.S.-funded Contra war.
