When installing the HP cd-writer plus m820e the adaptec software that is included with the drive, hangs the system if your are using a COMPAQ Presario 1685 laptop (at least that's what I tested it on). The reason for this is because the DVD drive conflicts with the cd-writer and the 'Hard Disk Controller' driver needs to be updated. There are two solutions to this problem: | solution 1 | A quick way to fix this is by desabling the DVD drive when recording by following the following steps (in win 98): - Go to Control Panel
- Click System
- Select the 'device manager' tab
- Select 'Hard Disk Controller'
- Select 'Ali Bus Master PCI to IDE Controller'
- Click on the 'properties' button
- Select 'Settings'
- From the 'Dual IDE Channel Settings' option list select 'Only Primary IDE Channel enabled'
- Click OK and follow on-screen instructions to reboot the system
NOTE: Remember to change your settings back after recording to have your DVD running normal again. | | solution 2 | If you thought that was painful, wait till you see what's coming... well it's not that bad, it just gets your DVD working in conjunction with your cd-writer plus m820e. This step requires you to update the driver of your Ali controller. NOTE: For this section make sure that there are no CD ROM driver references in the autoexec.bat nor the config.sys - visit: http://www.acerlabs.com/eng/support/driver.htm
- Click on the 'download' under 'IDE Driver ver.3.50' (NOTE: this driver works fine with the M5229)
- Extract the file into 'c:\windows\temp' (a folder called 'win9x' is created within this folder)
- Go to 'c:\windows\temp\win9x' and open the file 'Alihdd.inf' in a text editor
- Within 'Alihdd.inf' Change the line
from: 'HKLM,SOFTWARE\ALi\M5229,Mode,1,0,0,0,0'
to: 'HKLM,SOFTWARE\ALi\M5229,Mode,1,0,0,1,1'
- Run setup and then reboot the system.
- If you your windows doesn't start do the following:
a) start i 'safe mode' (hit the 'F8' key right before the windows logo appears)
b) go to folder 'c:\windows\system\iosubsys' and rename
- from: 'Trueffs.pdr'
to: 'Trueffs.pdr.old'
c) now rename:
- from: 'Esdi_506.pdr'
to: 'Trueffs.pdr'
Reboot and if problems persist follow these steps:
- go to folder 'c:\windows\system\iosubsys'

to: 'IDECDVSD.hp'
