GARIFUNA IN NEW YORK RALLY FOR HURRICANE KATRINA VICTIMS IN THE SOUTH

09/06/05
By: Jerry Castro
For Immediate Release: September 2, 2005

Templo Social club will host a community drive to aid the victims of the devastating Hurricane Katrina who have left thousands of families stranded in the Louisiana, Alabama and Texas region. This effort comes after representatives from Templo Night Club, known to be the Punta Rock Mecca in New York, sought community members to engage in the relief efforts of the aftermath of a hurricane that have destroyed communities.

Jorge Gonzalez, a representative from Garifuna Movement, a youth based Garifuna organization in Brooklyn, NY said that “it is important for our community to come together and show we too will contribute to the efforts”.

The city of New Orleans has been noted as a Garifuna destination in the south where families have settled in homes and have build communities. Although it is unknown the exact numbers of Garinagu in New Orleans, it is evident the effect the hurricane is having on Garinagu in New York as well as around the globe.

“I have yet heard from my family”, said Ronnie Martinez, a prominent Garifuna photographer and one who established Blackshark DJ Sound in New York.

“This is the time to come together in such tragedy”, says Carlos Martinez owner of Templo Night Club, “Anything people bring will be enough in order to provide to the people who are being affected by the devastation.”

The drive is scheduled for September 11th, 2005 at Templo Night Club in the Bronx. Bands expected to perform for charity includes Fernandez Band, Alagani, Rubi, Sielpa, Garifuna Legacy, Nino Arzu, Amistad Garifuna alongside DJ Ritchie, Nelsi, Fifi and Garisound.

The donation range from a minimum of $10.

The Drive is sponsored by Templo Night Club, Honduras Sports Club, Garifuna Movement, SHANY, Garifuna United and Lidani Garifuna Times.

Templo Night Club is located on 299 3rd Avenue between 154 &155th street in the newly developed Downtown Bronx.
