Kempner, acclaimed as one of the world's most fashionable women, died Sunday in New York, where she had moved from San Francisco as a young bride. She was 74, and the cause was emphysema.
Kempner was known for her party-hosting prowess -- from highbrow dinners with Princess Diana to lowbrow Sunday night spaghetti suppers -- for her fund-raising ability, and for plain being fun. She literally wrote the book on entertaining, "R.S.V.P.: Menus for Entertaining From People Who Really Know How," the proceeds of which go to the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.
