There are two elements of the original 1974 Longest Yard that make it perfectly suited for a remake in 2005 starring Adam Sandler. The first is the fact that the film is for all intents and purposes the first thoroughly modern sports movie; it could have been made in 1984 or even '94 and would likely have been the same. The second is the fact that Reynolds plays ringleader for the cast, and bolsters the strength of the overall ensemble; particularly in recent films, Sandler has proven to be less a coach directing his fellow actors than a quarterback helping them towards victory. Together, they make for a kick-ass combination, and earn this remake a spot alongside Happy Gilmore as one of the best cinematic efforts in the Sandler canon.
