Performing substantially better than forecasts anticipated, "National Treasure" with Nicolas Cage opens atop the local box-office chart and finishes in a virtual first-place tie throughout North America.
The comic adventure, about a treasure map clue imprinted on the back of the Declaration of Independence, was expected to debut in third place but stormed to the fore.
Running second here is the other national box-office leader, "The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie." It's one of three animated family movies in the top five.
