The Lords of Punta Rock: Jimmy Suazo

03/29/05

The Lords of Punta Rock: Jimmy Suazo
Serial # 1797 – 2005 / 1978 – 2005
Lachamuru Jerry Castro

In the end, when you come to think of it, if Jimmy Suazo had not braided his hair, he would have been an exact throwback replica of Marconi Star…without the glasses.
That’s enormous power, given the fact that Marconi during his time of shine, single handedly dominated the Punta Rock Empire.

With his 50 Cent-like styles, his rhythm got us hooked back in the day. There was not a day if you’d go to the restaurant, turn on the radio or go to a street festival without getting hooked on Marconi. And that put him in a place where most Punta Rockers hang the drum. He became a Punta Rock God. A Lord. A blessing. A Pen Cayetano disciple.

In the celebrations of Garifuna Heritage, no one, feel this, no one made us get hooked like Jimmy Suazo. Everyone looked forward to get the blessing of the upcoming Punta Rock God. In Hondu, they prepared. While in New York, the streets were filled like a Red Carpet Ceremony.

People came to give Honor. To represent. To feel. To remember. It was like Jordan and the Bulls. Jesus and the Hebrews or MLK with the Civil Rights.

If there was a party, you felt safer with Jimmy. He was blessed, he blessed and you got blessed.

Funny how it works, right? But that’s God’s way: you can see, but you can’t touch.
You can touch, but you can’t taste. You can taste, but you can’t swallow. If you swallowed, you unblessed, dishonored and unpuntaed.

That’s what separated him from the likes of Aziatic, Supa G and his peers. He was too traditional and too damn real to be comprehended. Feel me?

Life throughout its era has taught us very valuable lessons. With Jesus Christ, it was His Word that was to be spread. With Martin Luther King, it was His Love that was to be felt. In Jimmy Suazo, it was His Unity that was about to take place.

But we swallowed.

We unpuntaed by raising our Punta level to the highest scale and couldn’t contain it.

But it’s God’s way. And we didn’t even paid the closest attention.

We swallowed it too hard.

Rest in peace my friend.
