Question:
I HAVE TWO QUICK QUESTIONS, TO GET INTO THE INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY FIELD. WHAT CLASSES DO YOU RECOMMEND? MY EMAIL ADDRESS IS AGNESCATILLO@YAHOO.COM. THANKS AGNES
Answer:
Hi AGNES,
This is a very good question. I personally have a bachelor degree in Computer Science, where I was exposed to many areas of the field. But I would admit that I truly learned the practical part of the field on my own efforts and this is how I did it:
- From every new technology I wanted to get my hands on, I would buy the book, read it and practice the examples on the book. To make it challenging I would create my own projects and work on them on my own terms.
When I was broke, and you know most students are :) I would not let that stop me from learning so I would get on to either google.com or yahoo.com and search for tutorials in the area of my interest and apply the same concept above. This is how I came about learning Java for example.

From my experience, I could tell you that animation in Macromedia Flash is a very area to start. I see many businesses will utilize Flash as their medium to beautify their sites and create their beautiful interactive advertising. As we progress in this field, I also see a great deal of companies moving into content management systems to automatically administer their sites. As you can see, this is how garinet.com is run today. That's how I manage to control all the content for hundreds of pages. I would recommend that you learn a programming language that would allow you to build these types of applications. Although there are many, the primary one I use is PERL (www.perl.com). Learn this along with along with Structure Query Language(SQL), which allows the communication from the programming language to databases.
By all means, I’m not endorsing any of these products. You are free to choose anything that will work for your specific situation.
Good luck and feel free to contact me again, if you any specific question in the technology sector.
