Nicaragua » Bluefields, Orinoco...oh how nice & sweet are my Garinagu!
Oct 26, 2002

The Honorable Felix Miranda, Secretary General of WGO, gave me a call in
September of last year when we briefly spoke about Garinagu around the world. The story was facinating, but none were facinating than the ones from Nicaragua.

In a separate conversation, I spoke to Pen Cayetano in Germany where
the same thought and idea were shared: Save the Garifuna communities in
Nicaragua.

Since then, I have made it a priority to get involved with our people
in Nicaragua by constantly talking and communicating with OAGANIC and its
members, all thanks to David J. Hatch from Colorado who sent that email
in search for support for Nicaragua. And so far, there is a progress in
which the organization has accomplished: The organization has computer
classes that are offered to people in need of technological education as well as
projeccts that can save and implement the Garifuna culture into the youth who are the future leaders of tomorrow.

Kensy Sambola, president of the organization, breezed through the Bronx
in early September of 2002 for the ONECA Conference attended by Costa
Rica, Guatemala, Belize, Honduras and our beloved brother from Ecuador who
made that touching speech at Ms. Arzu's home:

"I have looked for you in my entire life, and now that I am here, I can
finaly feel that I am home."

Kensey and I spent some time in talking about Garinagu in Nicaragua and
the obstacles we face in that nation. I have spoken to Nazareno PC
Technology and its members who will donate more computers this coming 2003.

Another effort is that the Foundation of Garifuna Artists and its
members will donate their music to the organization to revitalize Punta Rock in
Nicaragua. So far Garifuna Legacy, Black Shark, James Lovell, J King
and Jimmy Suazo have donated their music.

"It's important we do this", said Jimmy Suazo at the organization's
meeting early this month. "We are here to help those in Nicaragua as well as
Garinagu around the world who need to implement music into their activities", he
continued.

The Foundation (aka FUNARGARI), is an aroganization created to protect
and promote Garifuna music and its artists. The members include bands such
as Garifuna Legacy, Jimmy Suazo, James Lovell, JKing and Kids, Black Shark
Movement, Garifuna New Generation and Grupo H among others.

So bluefields, get ready because the "shake it down" is coming your
way.
