If Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley happens to drop in from the nether world to catch USA Network's "Frankenstein," she will be in more exquisite suspense, surely, than any other viewer.
For one thing, the name Frankenstein occurs nowhere in the movie. The presumptuous fabricator here is one Victor Helios (Thomas Kretschmann), now residing in dark, dank New Orleans and somewhere around his 200th birthday.
For another, Shelley wrote her 1818 classic (and died in 1851) before the invention of the police-procedural novel. A major point of view in this "Frankenstein" is that of police detectives Parker Posey and Adam Goldberg, who are grimly following a serial killer who is harvesting body parts. Posey and Goldberg do much of their work at night or/and in dark, decaying structures recalling the humid, creepy atmosphere of David Fincher's 1995 thriller "Seven."
