A Bay Area underground rap star is dead after a highway shooting in Kansas City, Missouri.

Police say Andre Hicks, who is also known as Mac Dre, was killed when a gunman shot into a van he was riding in early yesterday morning.

The 34-year-old Hicks recorded more than a dozen albums, with the first released in 1989.

He also ran afoul of the law, serving prison time in the 1990s after he several others were arrested while preparing to rob a bank.
