IT'S somehow quite comforting to know that venerable newsman Tom Brokaw, who retires Wednesday, gave his parents a few gray hairs once he got to college.
After graduating from high school with honors, Brokaw admits he went on to the University of Iowa to major in "co-eds and beer."
"I came out of high school with everyone having high expectations and I drove off a cliff, but I never lost my passion for journalism," Brokaw says during a phone interview last week. "I was at home, between jobs after just getting fired from one, and I was watching the election coverage with David Brinkley and thought that being an anchor was something I'd like to do."
