Author and broadcaster Pierre Berton, who spent more than five decades chronicling the history of Canada, died yesterday at the age of 84.

Mr. Berton, a companion of the Order of Canada, passed away at the Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto, a spokeswoman confirmed.

Elsa Franklin, his agent and television producer for more than 40 years, said he died of heart failure after four weeks of hospitalization.
