Shana Slaletski has a task that most of the time is taken care of in court when translation is needed, but according to her message, a Bronx Supreme Court Justice has order the defendant to have his case being translated in Garifuna, the first case of its nature in a US Court.
"I am seeking your help and/or referrals. I am an attorney for The Legal Aid Society in the Bronx, and my colleague and I represent a Garifuna client (originally from Guatemala) who is currently on trial in Bronx Supreme Court. He is proficient in English and Spanish, but he is much more comfortable speaking in his native Garifuna language."
"The judge has asked me to seek out interpreters who can translate directly from Garifuna to English and vice versa. While the interpreter doesn't need to be certified by the court, he/she would need to actually work or have worked as an interpreter before."
This is a groudbreaking feat that Garifuna is being used in the court system to service Garinagu who practice the Constitutional First Amendment.
