Chaos erupted in the town of Aguacatan after a group of about 1,000 locals resisted Mayor Pablo Escobar's attempts to take city hall. Escobar won his third straight term as mayor during elections in November, but many residents believe he used fraud to steal the election.
Local police said residents in the town 155 miles (250 kilometers) northwest of the capital, Guatemala City, then blocked major roads, preventing emergency crews from rescuing the wounded.
In a phone interview, Aguacatan resident Nelly Rodas said the fighting began shortly after 10 a.m. and didn't subside until late in the afternoon.
"Things are grave here," Rodas said. "The town is in crisis."
