GARIFUNA COUNCIL OF NORTHERN

CALIFORNIA

NEWS LETTER
(NOVEMBER 3 – DECEMBER 31) 2000

Settlement Day in Northern California: Keeping our Traditions alive.

On November 18th, 2000, the Garifuna Council of Northern California plans to launch its first Garifuna Settlement Day Celebration event.

Garifuna settlement Day celebrates the arrival of the first Garifuna Settlers to Belize in 1802.  In St. Vincent the Garinagu lost the Battle of the British under their leader Chief Joseph Chatoyer. They were than forced off St. Vincent. There after, they spread to different Central American countries. We celebrate the 19th to acknowledge that even after 202 years we continue to survive despite our pass struggles.

We will have a potluck of Garifuna foods, display Garifuna craft and have a little drumming.

The event takes place at Mr. Ezekiel Velasquez House. For more information contact Zek  at babzeke@hotmail.com
