Humberto Lopez has made the pilgrimage to the top of Mount Cristo Rey for years, but he was praying for something special when he made the trip Sunday morning.
"My nephew is in Iraq, so I prayed that God will take care of him and help him come back," Lopez said. "When I was at the top I called him on my cell phone and he's doing good."
Many of the more than 35,000 pilgrims who made the journey prayed for the safety of loved ones overseas, and for the safety and future of the nation.
