It is estimated that 120,000 Honduran immigrants have being affected by Katrina & Rita. Perhaps 60,000 of them have been displaced to Houston, Comite Unidad Hondureña is working to assist them with their most elemental needs such as, shelter, food, health, housing information, and other issues.
We have being able to identify 1,146 refuge of Katrina (90% from Honduras, and about 10% each from El Salvador, México and Nicaragua).
Some of then are still homeless, others are in improvised shelters made available by churches, some are in hotels, and many others are staying with relatives or friends.
We have being providing them with information about the federal, state and local services, phone numbers, and all resources that have been made available to them. These are some of the concrete actions we have taken to address this emergency:
• Identification of Honduras refuges, visiting refuges center in Houston, Area.
• Last September 3, 2005 working for two days in a MARATHON to raise funds with local TV station TELEMUNDO, CARECEN, we collect donations (clothes, shoes, food, medicine others) We estimate that about 1000 people attended the event.
• Assisting families that want to move to other cities.
• Providing primary health check. Some of them were left without medication, and had high or low blood pressure, diabetes, sleep disorder, and many more symptoms.
• We have been able to assist in total 969 refuges with information, services, food, shelter, medical assisting, in the last 4 weeks.
• We estimate that about 30% of victims of the hurricane have not received the assistance they need (most of them undocumented) so the need to continue our work still exists.
• Every day people come by our offices asking help, to try to find a place for live.
• They need to start to rebuild their lives all over again, and work because most of them have families, children, mother, and father to feed.
• The current situation in our country is not good at this moment with high numbers of crimes, assaults, robberies, gangs, and unemployment.
• Many of the relatives living in Honduras depend on the money that immigrants sent back home, with the current situation, many immigrants are not going to be able to send money for a long period.
