CALIFORNIA LULAC APPOINTS FIRST LATINO OF AFRICAN DECENT AS STATE SECRETARY AND MEMBER OF ITS CIVIL RIGHTS COMMISSION AND ADOPTS A RESOLUTION CALLING FOR CALIFORNIA SCHOOL DISTRICTS TO INCLUDE CURRICULA ABOUT GARIFUNA HISTORY AND CULTURE DURING BLACK AND LATINO HISTORY MONTH WHICH WAS ALSO ADOPTED BY NATIONAL LULAC.
The League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) is the Nation’s Largest and Oldest Latino Organization. California League of United Latin American Citizens (CALULAC) appoints the First Latino of African Decent State Secretary and Member of Its Civil Rights Commission, in its 75 years and adopts a Resolution Concerning the Garifuna People; which is the Largest Black Ethnic Group In Central America With four host Countries in the Region: Honduras, Belize, Guatemala, and Nicaragua. The Resolution was also adopted by National LULAC

Los Angeles, California – The California League of United Latin American Citizens (CALULAC) conducted its State elections, on May 21st the final day of the 2006 CALULAC Convention, and adopted resolutions on key issues impacting the Hispanic community. Among those resolutions CALULAC called for California Schools Districts to Include Curricula About Garifuna History and Culture During Black and Latino History Month. The resolution was later adopted by National LULAC, at their National Convention on July 1st. On July 8th Tomás F. Zuñiga of Los Angeles was appointed State Secretary for CALULAC and Member of the its Civil Rights Commission making him the first Latino of African Decent in those positions. Zuniga has been working with the Garifuna community in the City of Los Angeles as the co-founder and President of Garinagu Empowerment Movement (GEM) a 501 c3 organization. Garifunas or Garinagu is the largest black ethnic group in Central America with communities in Honduras Belize Guatemala and Nicaragua. There are also Garifunas in their Homeland of Yurumein (St. Vincent) in the Caribbean. The Garifuna are also credited as the only black ethnic group in the diaspora that were never enslaved. Zuniga was born in Guatemala City.
