The Organization of American States (OAS) and the Bush administration encourage civil society organizations to take part in discussions at the upcoming Fourth Summit of the Americas, says Ambassador John Maisto, U.S. permanent representative to the OAS. At a January 25 meeting of the OAS Committee on Inter-American Summits Management and Civil Society, Maisto -- who serves as U.S. national summit coordinator -- cited the importance of consultations between civil society groups and regional governments as OAS member states prepare to convene at the summit, to be held in Argentina next November.
Maisto pointed to the proposed summit theme of job creation in the Western Hemisphere, hailing what he described as a "real desire ... to make some tangible progress toward creating more and better jobs for more and more people."
