CNN in Spanish and other national and international news programs every day for the last 10 days have brought horrifying pictures of the destruction in the New Orleans area into Honduran homes. With 125,000 Hondurans living in New Orleans according to Spanish daily La Prensa, including hundreds of Garifunas, the question on everyone’s mind was --how are my old friends, neighbors or family?

GARIFUNA IN NEW YORK RALLY FOR HURRICANE KATRINA VICTIMS IN THE SOUTH |

Templo Social club will host a community drive to aid the victims of the devastating Hurricane Katrina who have left thousands of families stranded in the Louisiana, Alabama and Texas region. This effort comes after representatives from Templo Night Club, known to be the Punta Rock Mecca in New York, sought community members to engage in the relief efforts of the aftermath of a hurricane that have destroyed communities.

Garinet.com turns 6 years old - brief history since 1999 |

When I had my first concept of Garinet in the mid 90's, I was attending Polytechnic University in Brooklyn, New York for my Computer Science degree. Prior to attending this school, I was already versed on many aspects of technologies(since around 1992), but I wanted to strengthen my skills to serve my Garifuna community better, rather than having all these great ideas in my head, passing away tomorrow, without contributing a bit to the progress of the Garifuna nation.

Our Garifuna Priest, Fr. Lazarus Augustine is not doing well |

Father Laz is not doing well. He has lost a lot of weight. He is weak and frail. Everything he eats, he throws up, so he does not have any energy at all. When we went to see him Saturday morning, he recognized us and spoke to us, but got tired easily. After visiting with him about an hour, we could sense that he had gotten tired and needed to get some rest, and so we left and came back later that evening.

Longer journeys via Honduras are increasing |

Isabel Guerrero last saw her husband and 20-year-old son 14 months ago. They took off from Santa Cruz del Sur, Cuba, a fishing village in southeastern Cuba in the dead of night, heading across miles of open water for Honduras and eventually, they hoped, a new life in the United States.
